the arts in science fiction

i am new to this organisation so i might introduce myself:
my name is dietrich killer, i am a graduate student in linz austria,
and i currently collect data for my PhD thesis in cultural sciences about the reflection of the arts in science fiction.
i based my initial reseach on the content of three novels:
"count zero" by william gibson
"perdido street station" by china mieville
and "absolution gap" by alasteir reynolds
these were, to me, the most exemplary samples to start with.
of course there`s lots of other stuff out there - and that`s the reason i joined

Hi. I have several questions I'd like to post under different topics regarding professional development, i.e., the publishing and promoting of book-length works of sf criticism. It's my hope that this forum will be especially useful to graduate students and scholars who don't have much experience with the (scholarly) publishing industry. Here's the first one:
